A down-and-out living on the streets of New York City is inspired to write the Oral History of our time. He writes down everything he hears in the Village (in the 1930s-40s), as he drifts around the hangouts of artists, poets and bohemians .... or does he? Joseph Mitchell gives a voice to the life of Joe Gould the author, but the Oral History is silent.
